Bulldogs finish 10-0 after Cotton Bowl victory

RAYMONDVILLE — For the first time since the Nixon administration, the Lyford Bulldogs are perfect.

Lyford broke a 40-year stretch and ended up 10-0 as the Bulldogs held off a scrappy Raymondville squad 36-23 on Friday night at Burnett Stadium.

The last time the Bulldogs went undefeated was 1969 and head coach Jaime Infante said he is glad his 2009 squad could share the limelight with them.

Lyford aims for 10-0 in Cotton Bowl against Raymondville

RAYMONDVILLE — For the first time in 18 seasons, the Lyford Bulldogs have a chance to finish a regular season undefeated.

Yes, the 1991 Bulldogs stormed to the third round thanks to Art Vela and head coach Joe Solis a host of other stars.

But all of the fanfare is absent from the 2009 Bulldogs’ locker room. They’re focused on the future and just how far they can go with their District 32-3A trophy in tow.

And Lyford head coach Jaime Infante likes it that way.

Sub-4A Notebook: Lyford Bulldogs eye perfection vs. Kats

The Lyford Bulldogs can make history.

Well, they can rewrite it.

With a win over Raymondville in the 67th installment of the Willacy County Cotton Bowl on Friday, Lyford (9-0 overall, 6-0 district) can finish a regular season 10-0 for just the fourth time ever and for the first time since 1969.

But the Bearkats (4-5, 2-4) definitely want to spoil the party for their neighbors and rivals at their home stadium.

Raymondville’s struggled at times this season, but are dangerous as anyone when they’re clicking.

Lyford holds off Rio Hondo to clinch district championship

LYFORD — The 32-3A torch has officially been passed.

Or rather, taken.

Lyford overcame a sluggish start and fought off a valiant Rio Hondo team to win 21-14 at Bulldog Stadium on Friday night.

With the win, Lyford stays perfect on the season at 9-0 and more importantly, 6-0 in league play. The Bulldogs clinch the district championship heading into next week’s Willacy County Cotton Bowl against Raymondville.

Trevor David proving that he's Mr. Versatility for Rio Hondo

RIO HONDO — In simplest terms, Trevor David is a football player.

And a tremendous one at that.

A 1,300-yard rusher a year ago, the senior was tabbed before the season to help the Rio Hondo Bobcats with his defensive skills. He hasn’t disappointed, manning his linebacker spot and terrorizing the opposition in the process.

On Friday, he’ll be part of Bobcat team looking for its fifth straight win when they take on undefeated Lyford on the road in a game that has major 32-3A title implications.
