Warriors win and they're in

BISHOP — The goal for the Santa Rosa Warriors tonight is simple: Win.

The Warriors (4-4 overall, 2-1 district) take on the Bishop Badgers tonight at Ed Gorny Stadium with a chance to secure the third straight playoff berth under head coach Joshua Gonzalez.

“You can’t ask for anything more than that. We’ve gotta go up there and take care of business,” Gonzalez said.

Santa Rosa comes in after a heartbreaking 8-7 home loss to Hebbronville last week, putting the Longhorns alone in first place.

But a Warrior win against the Badgers punches their playoff ticket.

Santa Rosa loses heartbreaker to Hebbronville

SANTA ROSA — After Joshua Watrous scored from three yards out on the Warriors’ first possession, Santa Rosa looked well on its way to a big district win. But that would be their only score. It almost was enough, but the Warriors came up short against the Hebbronville Longhorns, 8-7, Friday night at Warriors Stadium.

Sub-4A Notebook: Tarpons finally come to life during Week 7

It’s been hard to understand the Port Isabel Tarpons this season.

PI, favored by many to win 32-3A, lost its first three district games by a combined 14 points, and led the area in turnovers and bad breaks.

But all of that changed against La Feria last week. And the Tarpons hope it was just in time for a possible playoff push.

The Tarps (2-5, 1-3 district) amassed a mind-boggling 565 yards rushing and totaled 631 against the Lions.
It was also the third-best single game total in Valley football this season.

There were more good vibes to go around.

Sub-4A Notebook: La Feria always full of surprises on field

Over the past two seasons, the La Feria Lions have made a habit out of surprising people.

Of course, they’re not surprised.

A year ago, they beat a then-unbeaten Zapata team. Then they beat Port Isabel on the road. Then La Feria on the road. Then Robstown in bi-district. And of course, who could forget the “San Antonio Shocker” when they beat Bandera at the Alamodome.

The latest “caper” La Feria pulled off was a 33-33 last-second comeback against Raymondville last week.
