Mr. Pregame: Will your team win? Here's the answer

With the state tournaments starting this weekend, here’s highlighting the top five playoff games followed by a rapid-fire look at the rest:

McALLEN HIGH VS. EAGLE PASS: This year Eagle Pass has been as erratic as Sally Field playing Sybil. They’re up and they’re down, they’re in then they’re out … a walking Katy Perry song. I the Bulldogs will begin the playoff season with a lot more focus than their opponent. McALLEN HIGH 28, Eagle Pass 14

32-4A Notebook: Solis, E-E now are looking ahead

This week is usually a time when Edcouch-Elsa is preparing for the playoffs. For the past six seasons, they’ve come into this week thinking about a long run in the playoffs to go with another District 32-4A championship.

Now, the ’Jackets are thinking about next year.

Bird Bowl XVII has special meaning for AD Randy Cretors

HARLINGEN — Friday's going to be pretty special for Randy Cretors.

Cretors coached the Harlingen Cardinals from 2000-2006 before taking over his current post with the school district. Actually, Cretors started coaching at Harlingen in 1993 when the school district split into two high schools. Now in his third year as Harlingen CISD Athletic Director, Cretors still gets "the juices flowing" every Friday night just before a game.

The juices will be flowing tonight as Harlingen takes on Harlingen South in Bird Bowl XVII at Boggus Stadium.

32-4A playoff pairings already established

The flips are done. The maneuvering for home-field advantage the bi-district round is finished. And there’s still one week left in the regular season.

Mission High, which can clinch the district title outright with a win at Valley View, will play host to Alice next Friday night as 32-4A’s top seed in Division I. The Eagles having the home-field advantage was pre-determined because the two teams faced off in last year’s bi-district round at Alice, sending this year’s game to Tom Landry Stadium.

Mr. Pregame: Some heavy matchups on tap for Week 9

If you haven’t been out to a high school football game this year this is the week to catch one.

Five games this week have a lot on the line as Valley football enters Week 9 — the penultimate week for regular season games. Theoretically, a few district championships could be won this weekend to save the area fans from any suspense in Week 10.

Here it goes:

32-4A Notebook: 'Cats need win over Eagles for outright title

By Friday night, the drama of the District 32-4A playoff race could be over.

With a victory over Weslaco East, Mission High would clinch a share of the district championship and would win it outright if Mercedes loses when it plays host to Valley View. The win would also have extra significance for the Eagles, who would win their first district championship since 1993, ending an uncharacteristically long 16-year drought for the school.
