Sure-footed kicker Sanchez is delivering for the Redskins

DONNA — Manny Moreno asked Fernando Sanchez where he wanted the spot.

The Donna kicker told his coach he wanted the ball between the hash marks so he could boot the kick right down the middle, win the game and send McAllen Memorial home for the season. Once Moreno gave Sanchez what he had asked for, one of the Rio Grande Valley’s best kickers took care of the rest. It was a 27-yarder, but with the game on the line in front of the home crowd, nothing is ever as easy as it looks.

Rio Grande City looking to slay Dragons

CORPUS CHRISTI — As meaningful as last week’s victory was for Rio Grande City, Rattlers coach Jesus Lozano admitted the celebration only lasted through the night. Hours removed from the Rattlers’ win against La Joya coupled with Donna’s stunning rally over McAllen Memorial, which sent RGC back to the postseason since 2006, Lozano says it was back to the drawing board last Saturday morning.

30-5A Notebook: Donna's win over Memorial is impressive

EDINBURG — Donna’s come-from-behind win over McAllen Memorial last Friday is even more impressive because of how the Redskins did it. No team had really slowed the Mustangs’ talented skill players all season until the second half of their game against the Redskins.

Donna did a strong job of containing Memorial’s big threats. All season the Mustangs’ receivers exploded for big yardage after the catch. Last Friday, Memorial mustered only 65 yards passing. Some of that had to do with Donna’s offense controlling the clock during the second half.

Harlingen High completes No. 1 run in Valley top 10 poll

Harlingen High went the distance.

The Cardinals, who started the preseason with the top-ranking in Valley Freedom Newspapers’ top 10 poll, held the position for the entire regular season as they remained No. 1 when the final poll of the regular season was released Monday.

The final 2009 poll will be released after the Rio Grande Valley playoffs are complete.
