Three RGV football teams hope to shake 'Valley Week'

It’s that time of year.

The Thanksgiving holiday brings a lot more than just giving thanks in high school football.

It also ushers in the phenomenon known as “Valley Week,” normally the third round of the state playoffs that pits a 5A team from the RGV against a San Antonio or Austin-area Region IV team.

Based on the records over the last 19 seasons, it’s no wonder teams and fans in the Alamo City have some extra pep in their step during the week in November/December against their neighbors to the south.

Eagles beat Wildcats to win share of 32-4A title

MISSION — Joaquin Rios just couldn’t stop smiling after Mission High’s 42-35 win over Weslaco East. When he was doing interviews, he was smiling. Taking photos with classmates, smiling. Jogging over to the stands to accept congratulations from fans … yep, still smiling.

“It’s wild,” Rios said of the Eagles’ celebrations. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”

District 32-4A: Great game lost in shuffle of finish

For 47 minutes, Friday night’s Mission High-Mission Veterans Memorial game looked headed to a dramatic finish. The last minute, however, was what left the lasting impression.

District 32-4A: E-E looking to move on after loss

There must be something unlucky about numbers in the high 30s at Edcouch-Elsa.

Two years ago, the Yellowjackets’ regular season winning streak was snapped at 37 games when they lost 41-40 to Weslaco High in Week 1. Then, last Friday, the ‘Jackets’ District 32-4A winning streak was ended at 39 games by an 11-8 loss to Weslaco East.

E-E coach Joe Solis, who suffered his first district loss as the ‘Jackets coach, now must hope his team recovers from this streak-busting loss the way it did two seasons ago to the Weslaco defeat.

Gumaro Gonzalez worthy of his own praise

MISSION — Some older brothers might be resentful if their younger brother became one of the most recognizable players in the area. He might wonder why the younger sibling, not himself, was getting the preseason attention and accolades.

Mission High safety Gumaro Gonzalez isn’t like that toward his brother, junior quarterback Gilbert Gonzalez.

“He certainly gets more attention than I do. I kind of like it,” Gumaro Gonzalez said. “Let him get some (of the attention).

“I just take what comes to me. I’m thankful I’m pretty good, I guess.”
