LA JOYA --- Jose Bocanegra scored from three yards out to give the banged-up La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies a dramatic 27-24 win over the Valley View Tigers. The Huskies led 14-6 late but the Tigers’ Isaias Carrasco threw a 75-yard scoring pass to send the game to overtime.

Bocanegra, usually a running back, played about half the game at quarterback because of an injury-depleted backfield. Both QB Jesse Rodriguez and runners Joel Garcia and Eros Villarreal are out for the season and Bocanegra, who was already being depended upon heavily, had to carry even more of the load.

Meet of Champions

LA JOYA — Weslaco East dominated La Joya Juarez-Lincoln 28-0 in a District 32-4A game on Thursday night at La Joya ISD Stadium. The most valuable player? A stout and stingy Wildcats defense.

The home team was stagnant offensively, gaining only 58 yards in the first half (86 yards total). Running back Jose Bocanegra accounted for 80 of those yards.

LA JOYA — As freshmen can be, Michael Rodriguez was a little late after practice. His brother, junior quarterback Jesse Rodriguez, and two of his cousins, senior wide receiver Marco Lopez and junior defensive tackle Anthony Ochoa, were on time and settled, seated comfortably on a couch in Huskies coach Aaron Garcia’s office.
