This time, Tigers' late heroics fall short against Sandcrabs

KINGSVILLE — Mercedes head coach Mike Uribe stood on the 20-yard line of the south end of Javelina Stadium on Saturday and preached family values.

His team, muddied and tired, and some even crying, listened attentively as Uribe talked about life after football, the importance of family, brotherhood and most importantly the importance of being a man.

Uribe’s talk was like a sermon. And it was a wonderful speech.

Just not the one Uribe wanted to make this early in the postseason.

Harlingen fends off Southwest for rematch with Westlake

KINGSVILLE — Behind a stellar defensive effort and just enough from its offense, Harlingen High lived to play one more week as it defeated San Antonio Southwest 21-14 on a wet and muddy field Friday night at Javelina Stadium in a Class 5A Division I area game.

Harlingen (12-0) will play Austin Westlake at 4 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome in a rematch of last year’s regional contest.

Harlingen High ready for challenge against SA Southwest

KINGSVILLE — See Tre'vion Johnson. See Tre'vion Johnson run. See Tre'vion Johnson run…a lot.

It's no secret that the SA Southwest Dragons love to run the ball.

In 10 games, including a bi-district beatdown of Rio Grande City last week, the Dragons have rushed for 2,770 yards.

Johnson leads the team with 1,202 yards and 20 touchdowns, including a 196-yard and four-TD effort against the Rattlers last week. SW has gained 3,542 total yards on the season.

Mercedes drives past Tuloso-Midway into area round

CORPUS CHRISTI — Early on it appeared that Mercedes quarterback Albert Chavez was struggling, as he was making bad throws and had trouble running the ball.

But once he got rolling, there was no stopping him.

Chavez shook off a bad start and accounted for 341 yards of total offense (236 passing, 105 rushing) and five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) to lead the Tigers to a 35-14 victory over Tuloso-Midway in a Class 4A Division II bi-district game on Saturday night at Tuloso-Midway’s Warrior Stadium.

Cardinals overcome slow start to cruise past Greyhounds

HARLINGEN — Mack Sanchez zigged and Mack Sanchez zagged.

He broke a tackle here and a he broke a tackle there.

Then he sprinted.

The run will officially go down as a 52-yard touchdown run. But really, Sanchez covered about 105 yards of field running what seemed like circles around San Benito defenders.

Typical Mack The Knife.
