Badgers bolt past La Villa

LA VILLA 23 - The fireworks started early for the La Villa Cardinals but in the end it was the Ben Bolt Badgers who were able to pull away in the second half and gain at 40-23 victory.

With La Villa leading at the half the game’s turning point came in the third quarter on a blocked Jose Casas punt that set up the Badgers on the Cardinals’ 19-yard line with 8:50 left in the quarter. That scoring drive would be the first of 27 points scored in the half for the Badgers.

Sub-4A Roundup: Tarpons hope to slow No. 7 Bulldogs

PORT ISABEL — Frustrated can’t even begin to describe the mood of the Port Isabel Tarpons.

Hampered by turnovers and mental miscues, Big Blue has stumbled out to a 1-4 start, including 0-2 in District 32-3A. But PI will be focused Friday when they host No. 7 Lyford at Tarpon Stadium.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0) are unbeaten on the season and have been rolling over opponents thus far.

So PI head coach Monty Stumbaugh knows his squad has a challenge in front of it.

Sub-4A Notebook: La Feria always full of surprises on field

Over the past two seasons, the La Feria Lions have made a habit out of surprising people.

Of course, they’re not surprised.

A year ago, they beat a then-unbeaten Zapata team. Then they beat Port Isabel on the road. Then La Feria on the road. Then Robstown in bi-district. And of course, who could forget the “San Antonio Shocker” when they beat Bandera at the Alamodome.

The latest “caper” La Feria pulled off was a 33-33 last-second comeback against Raymondville last week.

La Villa's Cantu runs wild in win over Kingsville Academy

LA VILLA — Ricky Cantu outscored the Kingsville Academy Pride by himself last Friday night.

Naturally, he won’t take all of the credit. But it was that kind of night for the Cardinals’ super sophomore.

Cantu ran back two interceptions for touchdowns (95 and 14 yards), caught a 68-yarder for another score and even ran back a conversion attempt pass 100 yards for two points in the Cards’ 42-19 district-opening win over Kingsville Academy. He tallied 20 points in all.

Gridiron Gold: No. 11 Los Fresnos defined by consistency

The city of Los Fresnos loves its football. Winning, too.

The Los Fresnos Falcons have enjoyed a strong following for decades and for good reason, as the football program has been a consistent winner.

During 70 years of football, the Falcons have produced 34 winning seasons, including 22 state playoff appearances, and they currently own a three-year streak as the District 32-5A champions. Those marks land them at No. 11 in the best football programs in the history of the Rio Grande Valley, according to the Valley Freedom Newspapers sports writers.
