HARLINGEN — PSJA North's win against PSJA last week meant just a little more to Bruce Bush than the other nine this season.

Just a little.

The Raiders' 21-20 win against the Bears at PSJA Stadium was also Bush's 250th career win.

Bush spent two years as head coach of the Bears from 1981-82. He said reaching this milestone against one of his many old teams was special.

Bush was 19-3 in two yeas at the San Juan school.

"I got some of my early wins with the Bears," Bush said. "I told the kids this win was symbolic and special."

Bush began his coaching career in 1976 at Class 2A Dimmitt in the Texas Panhandle.

"I coached two games in the snow that year and we went to the playoffs that one year," Bush said.

Bush moved on to coach at Livingston for four years before arriving in the Valley for this first of three coaching stints with the PSJA Bears.

From PSJA, Bush went and coached the Alice Coyotes. At Alice, Bush had future Valley coaches Jaime Infante, Tony Villarreal and Jorge Pena on his staff.

Bush remained in Alice for six years. He stayed in the Coastal Bend for his next gig coaching at Gregory-Portland for six more years.

After coaching the Wildcats, Bush came to Donna in the spring of 1995 to coach the Redskins for two years.

Bush went on to coach the Rattlers of San Marcos for eight years until he decided to retire after the 2004 season.

That lasted three seasons before taking over as Raiders head coach for the 2008 season.

"When you sit and look back, you realize time passes by quickly," Bush said. "But the kids are always special. The kids always keep you young."

Bush and the Raiders take on Brownsville Pace on Friday in a Class 5A, Division II bi-district clash.

FINISHING STRONG

Edinburg Economedes and PSJA Memorial didn't have much to play for in Week Ten.

Even PSJA and Harlingen South were involved in rivalry games.

Even so, the Jaguars and Wolverines put on a show to end the season.

For Economedes, the Jags won their fourth game and scored the most points in one game this season with 42.

Nelson Hampton has 175 total yards and scored two TDs. He even threw a 57-yard TD pass.

For the Wolverines, QB Louie Gonzalez had a career night passing for 344 yards and two TDs. The junior completed 22-of-35 passes with one pick.

Memorial receiver Gilbert Gutierrez was on the receiving end of six completions for 173 yards and two TDs (42 and 70 yards).

YOUR IN GOOD HANDS

Harlingen cornerback Erwin Oliva saved the best for the last game of the regular season.

The speedy and nard-hitting senior picked off two different Harlingen South quarterbacks last week during Bird Bowl XVII in a 66-7 win.

The interceptions were Oliva's first two career picks as well. He's a two-year starter at CB for the Cards.

REAL GAMERS

Here's a list of the outstanding players from 31-5A during Week Ten.

>> Harlingen's Anthony Reyna caught four passes for 128 yards and three TDs.

>> Cards RB Pablo Garza rushed for 140 yards and one TD on 12 carries.

>> Edinburg North QB Matt Munoz had another big games with 258 total yards. He passed for 164 and three TDs and rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries.

>> Cougars receiver Danny Cardenas caught four passes for 95 yards and two TDs.

>> PSJA North RB JJ Rodriguez rushed for 156 yards and two TDs. He leads the district with 22 TDs.

>> Harlingen's Mingo Rincon recorded two sacks against Harlingen South and returned an interception for a TD. Rincon leads the Valley with 20 sacks.

THE BOBBY FACTOR

Harlingen's win gave the Cardinals only their third 10-0 season in Harlingen's storied history.

And Harlingen passing game coordinator Bobby Lucio has been a part of them all.

In 1976, Lucio was a defensive back on the Dread Red Defense as the Cards went 10-0.

Lucio served as an offensive assistant when Big Red did it against 20 years later in 1996.

The third one was special, however, as Lucio enjoyed it with his son, Luke.

Bobby and Luke are the first father-son pair to accomplish a 10-0 season at Harlingen High School.

EVEN STEVENS

The Edinburg Bobcats finished the season 5-5 with 202 points scored for and 202 points scored against.
