HARLINGEN — The Valley's football postseason couldn't have kicked off with a better matchup.

In a rematch of the 80th Battle of the Arroyo, the Harlingen Cardinals will host the San Benito Greyhounds on Friday at Boggus Stadium in a Class 5A, Division I bi-district playoff game. Harlingen, which secured a playoff berth a couple of weeks ago, wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 66-7 win against Harlingen South on Friday.

Harlingen (10-0) and head coach Manny Gomez now turn their attention and focus to another rival in the Greyhounds (6-4). Harlingen defeated San Benito 35-6 on Sept. 11 at Boggus Stadium.

"We're all excited," Gomez said. "You know there's going to be tons of people. And it's always fun to play in a stadium packed with people. It should be a fun evening for everyone."

The Battle 80.5 isn't the only intriguing clash between 31-5A and 32-5A foes.

District 32-5A champion Brownsville Hanna (9-1) hosts the Edinburg Bobcats (5-5) in the other Division I bi-district game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

In Division II, Los Fresnos (7-3) hosts Edinburg North (7-3) in a rematch of last year's bi-district tilt and PSJA North (9-1) and Brownsville Pace (7-3) square off at PSJA Stadium. Both games are set for Friday at 7:30 p.m.

From the upper Valley, Sharyland (10-0) plays at home against Laredo Alexander on Friday as well in a Class 5A, Division II clash.

McAllen (7-3) and Eagle Pass (7-3) square off in the other 30-5A-29-5A Division II game. The game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the SAC in Laredo.

In the Division I bracket of these matchups, Rio Grande City (5-5) plays 29-5A champs San Antonio Southwest (9-0) on Friday at Calallen.

Donna (7-3) plays Del Rio (8-2) on Saturday at the SAC in Laredo at 6:30 p.m.

In Class 4A, Division I, the 32-4A champion Mission Eagles (9-1) get to stay home for their playoff opener.

The Eagles host the Alice Coyotes (6-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Tom Landry Stadium.

Staying in Mission, the Veterans Patriots (6-4) make their second postseason appearance in the school's short history.

The Patriots play the Hornets of Flour Bluff on Friday at 7:30 at Kingsville's Javelina Stadium.

In Division II, Weslaco East (8-2) hosts traditional Valley nemesis Calallen (9-1) on Friday at Bobby Lackey Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Mercedes (7-3) plays at Tuloso-Midway (6-3) at 7 p.m.

In Class 3A, Division I, Zapata (6-4) takes on Ingleside (9-1) at La Joya ISD Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

In Division II, the undefeated 32-3A champs Lyford Bulldogs (10-0) travel to Mathis (7-3) to take on the Pirates on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Rio Hondo (5-5) goes to Sinton to battle those Pirates (9-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

This game was originally scheduled to be played at Falfurrias. But both coaches decided early Saturday to flip for home and home. Sinton won the flip.

Finally, the La Villa Cardinals (5-5) go to Bishop where they take on state-ranked Falls City (10-0) at Ed Gorny Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
