The top three teams in Valley Freedom Newspapers’ high school football top 10 poll released Monday received the identical votes from the five district beat writers. After those top three teams, however, there was some jostling of the final seven teams.

Harlingen High (8-0), Sharyland (8-0) and PSJA North (8-0) kept the top three spots, respetively, in the latest poll. The Cardinals, the No. 1 team in the poll since the preseason, will play the No. 3 Raiders on Friday night at PSJA Stadium.

No. 2 Sharyland will battle for the District 30-5A title when it plays McAllen Memorial on Friday night in McAllen.

After the top three teams is where the newest top 10 changed its form. Weslaco East (7-1), which was previously No. 4, fell to No. 9 after a home loss to Mercedes. That defeat allowed Brownsville Hanna (7-1) and Lyford (8-0) to move up one spot to fourth and fifth, respectively. Mission High (7-1) and Los Fresnos (6-2), both coming off of wins, moved up two spots to No. 6 and No. 7, repectively.

Mercedes (5-3) climbed to No. 8 with its upset of Weslaco East, which follows the Tigers in the poll.

San Benito (5-3), which has won four straight, completes the top 10.
