Rams hold off Bobcats

SAN ANTONIO — The Edinburg High Bobcats will have to stomach essentially giving away Saturday night’s area round game to Del Rio for the rest of the offseason.

The Bobcats held on for as long as they could despite five turnovers before the Rams finally put the game away late, scoring 14 points off of those errors in a 22-12 victory at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.

AREA ROUND GAME DAY PREP MATERIAL

Rios a multi-purpose star for Eagles

MISSION — Tom Landry Stadium has felt like a different place this season. Unlike in recent years, there’s been a tense yet exciting feeling around this year’s Mission High Eagles team, with expectations moving from just a playoff berth to something more, something more memorable.

Perhaps no player symbolizes that excitement more than wide receiver/defensive back Joaquin Rios. On one of the Valley’s fastest teams, Rios’ speed and playmaking ability stands out.

Injuries too much for Bulldogs to overcome against Eagles

LAREDO — Playoff games are not the times you want to be experimenting with your lineup, but McAllen High was left with no choice and despite numerous personnel moves, the Bulldogs nearly pulled it off.

But Randy Garcia’s four touchdowns were too much for the Bulldogs, and Eagle Pass came away with a 28-21 victory on Friday in a Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff at the Student Activities Center.

Despite McAllen High’s injuries, Inskeep says his ’Dogs will be fine

McALLEN — Scott Inskeep almost can’t believe how many McAllen High players will miss Friday night’s Class 5A, Division II bi-district game against Eagles Pass in Laredo.

The Bulldogs have been hit hard by injuries, especially at the skill positions. Although it is tough for him to fathom how many Bulldogs will be sidelined, Inskeep is not one to worry.

“We’ll be ready to play,” Inskeep said as he walked to practice Wednesday.

Garcia is a go-to player for McAllen Memorial

McALLEN — At halftime of McAllen Memorial’s game against Sharyland last week, Mustangs standout Ben Garcia’s numbers were pedestrian at best.

Some of that had to do with Sharyland’s defense, but Garcia had only four carries for 24 yards at intermission.

Similar to many of the other Mustangs skill players, Garcia, who will help lead the Mustangs against Donna in on Friday at Bennie La Prade Stadium, needed only one play to make an impact.
