Favila: You can't blame the guys for trying on the field

Apparently much of the Valley viewed Will Ferrell’s “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” immediately following the Harlingen Cardinals 42-13 loss to Austin Westlake on Friday night.

I say this because it would appear that several Valley football fans believe — just as Ricky Bobby did in the film — that “if you ain’t first, you’re last.”

Despite a wonderful season that saw the Cards go 12-1, there are people out there who believe that Harlingen’s season went to waste after losing to the Chaparrals.

32-4A Notebook: Solis, E-E now are looking ahead

This week is usually a time when Edcouch-Elsa is preparing for the playoffs. For the past six seasons, they’ve come into this week thinking about a long run in the playoffs to go with another District 32-4A championship.

Now, the ’Jackets are thinking about next year.

Mercedes trying to keep momentum for playoffs

Even with a win, Mercedes will still need Valley View to beat the Eagles to have a chance at the District 32-4A championship. The events of that game don’t seem to be taking up too much space in Mercedes coach Michael Uribe’s mind, choosing instead to focus on his team’s season finale against the Huskies.

“It would be nice, but Mission is talented and their coach has no problem motivating them,” Uribe said. “They won’t be asleep. They won’t go in there feeling comfortable.”

Mission High looks to win 32-4A title outright

The No. 4 Mission High Eagles have already clinched a share of their first district title since 1993. With a win tonight at Valley View, the Eagles (8-1, 6-0) won’t have to worry about sharing the championship.

And that, not just splitting the title, is the goal for coach Mario Peña and the Eagles.
