Favila: You can't blame the guys for trying on the field

Apparently much of the Valley viewed Will Ferrell’s “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” immediately following the Harlingen Cardinals 42-13 loss to Austin Westlake on Friday night.

I say this because it would appear that several Valley football fans believe — just as Ricky Bobby did in the film — that “if you ain’t first, you’re last.”

Despite a wonderful season that saw the Cards go 12-1, there are people out there who believe that Harlingen’s season went to waste after losing to the Chaparrals.

Mission Veterans falls short in upset bid of Flour Bluff

KINGSVILLE — The dried blood was still on the right cheek of Mission Veterans Memorial coach David Gilpin’s face. A few yards away, Patriots quarterback Eddie Mendiola limped off the field with what he said was a torn right hamstring.

Despite their 55-35 Class 4A, Division I bi-district loss to heavily-favored Flour Bluff, neither seemed to regret anything. And both personified what the Patriots did both Thursday night and this season, regardless of the loss.

Mission Veterans looks to pull big upset of Flour Bluff

Mission Veterans Memorial probably cannot outplay Flour Bluff for 48 consecutive minutes. But six? That might be more reasonable.

Heading into tonight’s Class 4A, Division-I bi-district game at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Patriots coach David Gilpin is telling his team to focus on six-minute spurts against the Hornets (9-1). If the Patriots (6-4) can stay with the District 31-4A champions for six minutes, Gilpin plans, that might spawn another six, and another six and so forth.
