Rio Grande City looking to slay Dragons

CORPUS CHRISTI — As meaningful as last week’s victory was for Rio Grande City, Rattlers coach Jesus Lozano admitted the celebration only lasted through the night. Hours removed from the Rattlers’ win against La Joya coupled with Donna’s stunning rally over McAllen Memorial, which sent RGC back to the postseason since 2006, Lozano says it was back to the drawing board last Saturday morning.

30-5A Notebook: Donna's win over Memorial is impressive

EDINBURG — Donna’s come-from-behind win over McAllen Memorial last Friday is even more impressive because of how the Redskins did it. No team had really slowed the Mustangs’ talented skill players all season until the second half of their game against the Redskins.

Donna did a strong job of containing Memorial’s big threats. All season the Mustangs’ receivers exploded for big yardage after the catch. Last Friday, Memorial mustered only 65 yards passing. Some of that had to do with Donna’s offense controlling the clock during the second half.

32-4A Notebook: Solis, E-E now are looking ahead

This week is usually a time when Edcouch-Elsa is preparing for the playoffs. For the past six seasons, they’ve come into this week thinking about a long run in the playoffs to go with another District 32-4A championship.

Now, the ’Jackets are thinking about next year.

Sharyland has made history with 10-0 regular season

MISSION — For years the current crop of Sharyland Rattlers walked through the main hallway of the field house to see photos of their heroes hanging from the wall.

Rattlers coach Fred Sanchez started a tradition when he arrived at the school in 2000 of hanging the photos of each of the all-district players just outside the weight room.

31-5A, 32-5A matchups to highlight first round of playoffs

HARLINGEN — The Valley's football postseason couldn't have kicked off with a better matchup.

In a rematch of the 80th Battle of the Arroyo, the Harlingen Cardinals will host the San Benito Greyhounds on Friday at Boggus Stadium in a Class 5A, Division I bi-district playoff game. Harlingen, which secured a playoff berth a couple of weeks ago, wrapped up a perfect regular season with a 66-7 win against Harlingen South on Friday.
