Unbeaten Bulldogs ready for challenge in Mathis

MATHIS — The last time the Lyford Bulldogs faced a team of Pirates in the first round, things didn’t go as planned.

In 2008, Lyford brought the Sinton Pirates down to Bulldog Stadium and watched them win 48-14.

This year, the Dogs are hoping for a different result against —again— Pirates.

However, it’s the Mathis Pirates that 10-0 Lyford will face when the Bulldogs trek to the Coastal Bend tonight for their Class 3A Division-II bi-district game.

Weslaco East faces Calallen challenge

By Mike Gonzalez

RGVSports.com

WESLACO — Phil Danaher has been through this experience too many times.

As the Calallen coach for the last 26 years, Danaher has brought his Wildcats bunch into a hostile Valley environment where gates had to be closed due to fans trying to get into the stadium.

Danaher brought up the night Calallen faced Edcouch-Elsa in a 1997 Class 4A state quarterfinal game at a sold-out McAllen Memorial Stadium, as well as a contest in the Black Hole earlier in the decade.

32-4A Notebook: Solis, E-E now are looking ahead

This week is usually a time when Edcouch-Elsa is preparing for the playoffs. For the past six seasons, they’ve come into this week thinking about a long run in the playoffs to go with another District 32-4A championship.

Now, the ’Jackets are thinking about next year.
