Sub-4A Notebook: Lyford Bulldogs eye perfection vs. Kats

The Lyford Bulldogs can make history.

Well, they can rewrite it.

With a win over Raymondville in the 67th installment of the Willacy County Cotton Bowl on Friday, Lyford (9-0 overall, 6-0 district) can finish a regular season 10-0 for just the fourth time ever and for the first time since 1969.

But the Bearkats (4-5, 2-4) definitely want to spoil the party for their neighbors and rivals at their home stadium.

Raymondville’s struggled at times this season, but are dangerous as anyone when they’re clicking.

Zapata wins shootout against Progreso

ZAPATA --- Despite falling behind 17-0, the Hawks rallied to beat the Red Ants 62-44 and clinch a playoff spot.

Progreso coach Elvis Hernandez was still proud of his team’s effort, which saw them try to keep pace with a high-scoring Zapata team.

“Our kids didn’t give up and kept on fighting until the end,” Hernandez said. “That’s what we expect from them. It’s hard, especially for the seniors.”

Hernandez acknowledged the difficulty of his team’s task Friday.

Sub-4A games: Tarpons face big test in Hawks

PORT ISABEL — There’s always been talent with the Port Isabel Tarpons.

But now there’s hope. And it’s a powerful thing.

Back from the brink by defeating La Feria last week, PI hopes for its second straight 32-3A win when they host the second place Zapata Hawks tonight at Tarpon Stadium.

PI (2-5, 1-3 district) can put itself in great shape for a playoff push with just two weeks left after starting out 0-3 in district.

“Hopefully we can build on that victory,” Tarpon head coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “We know we’ve got a tough ballgame. Zapata’s on a roll.”

Sub-4A Notebook: Things are wide open in 32-3A race

There’s no denying it now: District 32-3A is arguably the most wide-open race in Valley football this season.

Currently, Lyford sits at 3-0 in district and then four teams come in at 2-1 in district with four games to play.

This weekend may show just how tight things can become. But last week showed exactly how even the teams are.

Rio Hondo stomps out Progreso

PROGRESO - After starting off District 32-3A play 0-1, the Rio Hondo Bobcats have won consecutive games after defeating the Progreso Red Ants 47-27 on Friday night at Red And Stadium.

The Bobcats defeated the Red Ants behind a consistent running attack and stellar play by Isaiah De La Cruz.

“Isaiah’s a great asset to our team,” Bobcats coach Rocky James said after the game. “He does whatever is needed for the team, he starts at quarterback but when we want to develop our freshman quarterback, Juan Puga, he gladly passes the reigns and becomes a threat at receiver.

Sub-4A Roundup: Tarpons hope to slow No. 7 Bulldogs

PORT ISABEL — Frustrated can’t even begin to describe the mood of the Port Isabel Tarpons.

Hampered by turnovers and mental miscues, Big Blue has stumbled out to a 1-4 start, including 0-2 in District 32-3A. But PI will be focused Friday when they host No. 7 Lyford at Tarpon Stadium.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0) are unbeaten on the season and have been rolling over opponents thus far.

So PI head coach Monty Stumbaugh knows his squad has a challenge in front of it.
