Bulldogs get tamed by Mathis

MATHIS — Donnie Butler is fast.

The rest of the Mathis Pirates aren’t too far behind.

Butler spearheaded a Mathis running game that pounded out 472 total yards with 296 of his own with four touchdowns as the Pirates ran past Lyford 41-24 in their Class 3A Division-II bi-district game here Friday night.

Butler scored on gallops 55,74, 56 and 37 as Mathis’ slot-T scheme was more than effective for the Pirates (8-3).

Rio Hondo falls short against Sinton

SINTON — Rio Hondo literally saw the game slip right out of its hands.

Trailing by seven, Rio Hondo got the ball to the Sinton 10-yard line and had momentum on its side with less than five minutes to play.

But quarterback Juan Puga fumbled the ball at the 2-yard line and the Pirates recovered and went on to defeat a scrappy Rio Hondo squad, 28-21.

Sinton improved to 10-1 and will face Pearsall in the area round. Rio Hondo ends its season at 5-6.

Bobcats feeling confident vs. Sinton

SINTON — The records don’t suggest it, but the Rio Hondo Bobcats fully expect to compete and win tonight against the Sinton Pirates.

That’s half the battle.

The Cats (5-5) will try and accomplish the other half—on the field— against the 9-1 Pirates in their Class 3A Division-II bi-district game at Pirate Stadium.

“We feel good. We’ve watched a lot of film on Sinton and we’ve put in our work,” Rio Hondo head coach Rocky James said. “We’re ready to go and the kids are excited.”

Unbeaten Bulldogs ready for challenge in Mathis

MATHIS — The last time the Lyford Bulldogs faced a team of Pirates in the first round, things didn’t go as planned.

In 2008, Lyford brought the Sinton Pirates down to Bulldog Stadium and watched them win 48-14.

This year, the Dogs are hoping for a different result against —again— Pirates.

However, it’s the Mathis Pirates that 10-0 Lyford will face when the Bulldogs trek to the Coastal Bend tonight for their Class 3A Division-II bi-district game.

Line leading Rio Hondo's surge

RIO HONDO — The Rio Hondo Bobcat defensive line is made up of characters.

They’re also pretty good football players.

The personable group will look to be on its game Friday when the Bobcats visit Sinton in their Class 3A Division-II bi-district matchup.

The foursome consists of end Freddy Gonzalez, Manny Melendez, Randy Rodriguez and end E.J. Castaneda. Gonzalez and Castaneda are sophomores.
