Edinburg North's Edwards comes up big in the clutch

EDINBURG – Simon Edwards’ brief athletic career can be summed up in two words:

Patience and perseverance.

Those two things came together last Friday when Edwards spurned off a career-high 207 yards on 15 carries in a 28-24 Cougars victory against undefeated Sharyland in a Class 5A Division II playoff at Cats Stadium.

The win sends Edinburg North to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Coguars (9-3) play San Antonio Brandeis (11-1) in a Region IV semifinal at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Mission High looks to continue rebirth with win

MISSION — So far, the Mission High Eagles have pretty much backed up what they said before the season. Though some of them did say anything less than a 10-0 regular season would be a disappointment, the 9-1 Eagles have met all other goals they wanted to reach.

They wanted to improve from last year. Done. They wanted to become District 32-4A’s best defense. Done. Most importantly, they wanted to win the school’s first district title since 1993. Done.

Cardinals' Zamora anchors awesome linebacker crew

HARLINGEN — Size can be a state of mind.

Standing at 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, Harlingen linebacker Dallas Zamora might not seem too intimidating.

But in his mind, Zamora is a beast. And on the field, he plays like one too.

Zamora anchors a linebacking crew that doesn’t feature too much size.

Moses Molina isn't much bigger. But the senior hits like a freight train.

The same for juniors Aaron Martinez and Jose Campos.

Harlingen's linebackers aren't big. But they're smart and they love to hit.

31-5A Notebook: PSJA North's Bush gets win No. 250

HARLINGEN — PSJA North's win against PSJA last week meant just a little more to Bruce Bush than the other nine this season.

Just a little.

The Raiders' 21-20 win against the Bears at PSJA Stadium was also Bush's 250th career win.

Bush spent two years as head coach of the Bears from 1981-82. He said reaching this milestone against one of his many old teams was special.

Bush was 19-3 in two yeas at the San Juan school.

"I got some of my early wins with the Bears," Bush said. "I told the kids this win was symbolic and special."
