AREA ROUND GAME DAY PREP MATERIAL

Mercedes drives past Tuloso-Midway into area round

CORPUS CHRISTI — Early on it appeared that Mercedes quarterback Albert Chavez was struggling, as he was making bad throws and had trouble running the ball.

But once he got rolling, there was no stopping him.

Chavez shook off a bad start and accounted for 341 yards of total offense (236 passing, 105 rushing) and five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) to lead the Tigers to a 35-14 victory over Tuloso-Midway in a Class 4A Division II bi-district game on Saturday night at Tuloso-Midway’s Warrior Stadium.

Quarterback Chavez, Mercedes set to begin the playoffs

MERCEDES — Albert Chavez’s season has been one of the most dynamic by a Valley quarterback in recent memory. His 23 touchdown passes and 2,143 yards both led District 32-4A, while he finished third in rushing with 1,181 yards.

Mr. Pregame: Will your team win? Here's the answer

With the state tournaments starting this weekend, here’s highlighting the top five playoff games followed by a rapid-fire look at the rest:

McALLEN HIGH VS. EAGLE PASS: This year Eagle Pass has been as erratic as Sally Field playing Sybil. They’re up and they’re down, they’re in then they’re out … a walking Katy Perry song. I the Bulldogs will begin the playoff season with a lot more focus than their opponent. McALLEN HIGH 28, Eagle Pass 14

Santa Rosa falls short of playoffs

SANTA ROSA — It was Cowboys versus Indians Friday night at Warrior Stadium, with a potential playoff spot at stake for Santa Rosa if they won by at least ten points. But chronic turnovers, particularly in the second half, spoiled any hopes for such a victory, and the Warriors lost 19-7 to the San Diego Fighting Vaqueros.

Lyford aims for 10-0 in Cotton Bowl against Raymondville

RAYMONDVILLE — For the first time in 18 seasons, the Lyford Bulldogs have a chance to finish a regular season undefeated.

Yes, the 1991 Bulldogs stormed to the third round thanks to Art Vela and head coach Joe Solis a host of other stars.

But all of the fanfare is absent from the 2009 Bulldogs’ locker room. They’re focused on the future and just how far they can go with their District 32-3A trophy in tow.

And Lyford head coach Jaime Infante likes it that way.

Sub-4A Notebook: Lyford Bulldogs eye perfection vs. Kats

The Lyford Bulldogs can make history.

Well, they can rewrite it.

With a win over Raymondville in the 67th installment of the Willacy County Cotton Bowl on Friday, Lyford (9-0 overall, 6-0 district) can finish a regular season 10-0 for just the fourth time ever and for the first time since 1969.

But the Bearkats (4-5, 2-4) definitely want to spoil the party for their neighbors and rivals at their home stadium.

Raymondville’s struggled at times this season, but are dangerous as anyone when they’re clicking.
